Preventing Phishing

KakaoTalk offers the "Globe Signal", "Stranger Signal" and "Fake Signal" functions (hereinafter referred to as "Talk Siren") to help protect users from phishing crimes. The Talk Siren function alerts users to potential phishing attempts.

Users can check the warning signs, then block or report accounts that are suspected of phishing. However, not all blocked or reported friends can be considered as having malicious intent to phish. The reported accounts will be reviewed by expert reviewers for any patterns of fraud and will be immediately and permanently restricted from using the service if such fraudulent activities are detected.

This report contains data on accounts that have been blocked or reported through the “Talk Siren” warning signs. Data on service restrictions are not included in this report, but is available in the Follow-Up Measures > Chats report.

Summary

In the first half of 2025, more than 255K accounts were blocked by users through Talk Siren alerts, including Globe Signal, Stranger Signal, and Fake Signal, of which more than 60K accounts were reported.

The number of accounts blocked through Talk Siren decreased by approximately 27%, compared to the second half of 2024. This decline is attributed to the establishment of an “early self-blocking” pattern, a behavior in which a user blocks a person immediately after checking an alert.

Meanwhile, the number of reported accounts decreased by approximately 5%, but a pattern in which users report when they become aware of Talk Siren alerts has been confirmed to remain stable. In particular, a 30% increase in the number of blocks through Fake Signal is seen as an indicator that users have been actively using the new alert system with confidence.

These changes suggest that a higher level of automation in detecting and blocking malicious users has been achieved and that a proactive reporting ecosystem, where users also autonomously respond based on alerts, is being established.

Kakao plans to continuously strengthen its capabilities for preemptive blocking of malicious users and harm prevention by advancing a user participation-based reporting function and a sophisticated warning system.
